How to use this resource

Start with a quick overview, then go deeper only if needed

Step 1 Use the quick check for an overview

Scan six useful signs before contacting a provider or reflecting on a trial session.

Step 2 Use the PDF for the full process

Bring the complete checklist to a tour, provider conversation, or trial session.

Step 3 Use what you notice to plan support

Turn the observations into a clearer routine, transition plan, or sensory support plan.

What good fit can look like

Look for fit, not perfection

A class does not have to be quiet, easy, or free of challenge to be a good fit. The more useful question is whether the child has enough predictability, support, flexibility, and emotional safety to participate meaningfully.

  • Start with the child’s interests and preferred ways of joining.
  • Separate normal unfamiliarity from repeated overload or distress.
  • Look at recovery afterward, not only behavior during the class.
Six things to consider

Quick class fit check

Tap the boxes that already seem true and notice which areas may need a question, support, or closer observation. You do not need every box checked before trying a class.

An unchecked box is not automatically a “no.” It may simply point to something to ask about, observe during a trial, or support differently next time.

Turn what you noticed into practical support

Once you know what may help, make the next session easier to understand and prepare for instead of trying to remember every detail.

Common questions

Activity class fit checklist FAQ

What is the difference between the quick check and the PDF?

The on-page quick check is a brief six-point overview of the child’s interest, predictability, instructions, participation flexibility, instructor response, and recovery. The downloadable PDF is the complete three-page tool with provider questions, trial observations, writing boxes, recovery notes, and next-step planning.

What makes an activity class sensory-considerate?

A sensory-considerate class notices avoidable barriers and offers practical ways to participate. That may include clear routines, understandable instructions, gradual participation, manageable transitions, appropriate breaks, and flexibility around useful supports.

Should I ask every question in the printable?

No. Choose the questions most relevant to the child and the activity. A few clear questions usually create a better conversation than presenting every item when many do not apply.

Does a difficult first session mean the class is a poor fit?

Not automatically. Unfamiliar people, places, and routines can make a first session difficult. Consider the child’s interest, the instructor’s response, recovery afterward, and whether specific changes could make another attempt more usable. Repeated distress or an unwillingness to adjust should not be ignored.

Can this checklist be used for teens?

Yes. Invite the teen to lead the checklist wherever possible. They may also want to evaluate privacy, peer culture, independence, instructor communication, schedule demands, and recovery time.

This checklist is educational and is not a diagnostic assessment or a substitute for individualized medical, therapeutic, educational, or legal advice. Activity providers set their own safety and participation policies. Confirm accommodations and available supports directly with the provider.
